Hey, it's Bex!

Welcome to my little corner of the internet - home to my latest artworks and random ramblings from my brain.

I am a Cornish painter who has spent the last six years working overseas - doing everything from scrubbing toilets, to serving rich people on yachts, to baking cakes in the Alps and everything else in between.

As much as I loved the seasonal life (and I REALLY loved it), I was craving art! Slapping paint onto a canvas and getting messy in a pair of old jeans was literally all I could think about (and drawing in my tiny sketchbook at 1 AM on my 30-minute break just wasn't cutting it).

Painting has long been my passion ever since I was a little girl. It then exploded when I started life drawing classes at school, which is what kick-started my love of drawing the figure.

Since then, I've been creating work on the down low, but I never deemed myself good enough because I did not go to art college, which is madness.

But that's old news now...

I am constantly inspired by Western culture (from spending years working in Stateside), surfing, cowboy hats, side buns, tequila, palm trees and coffee culture, so my figures usually reflect those things.

I love to be bold and use bright colours and utilise different mediums - from acrylic, oil, to pencil and pastels.

'Girl With A...' Series

This series is a 5-piece collection inspired by all of Bex's favourite places.

The girls' Bex paints bring back fond memories of fun, culture and creativity from Italy, France and the USA.

'lombok series'

inspired by bex's time in lombok, indonesia, this mini series includes original art and prints centred around slow village life. it features coffee, surfing and a soft palette.

'cowgirl' mini series

this mini series was a way to express some fun, during a somewhat cold and rainy winter. I love all things western and wanted to bring colour, fun and personality to these a5 originals.

Lots of exciting things happening this week, including new opportunities for my art, getting back on the tennis court (any new competition welcome) and developing a new obsession with Vinted (very late to the party).

Also very into with clean coffee at the moment - it’s made me feel 1000x better (no jitters or crashes). Thank you @yourexhale 💯

In light of all this excitement and wanting to chat shit whilst I draw, I’m going to be doing weekly updates alongside my mini cowgirl drawings, because they’re my fav and often inspire me for future collections. I promise to make sure they’re not too boring ;)

This week I’m using Indian brown ink, sennelier oil pastels and water colour pencils.

Did I expect this to be my reality at this point in my life?

Absolutely not.

But, I have no regrets.

I’ve travelled, seen a lot of the world, gained outside perspectives and had experiences that have shaped who I am as a person and as an artist.

Do I sometimes feel ‘behind’ or scared that I don’t have a house, a husband, a huge savings account or a baby?? Hell yes. I don’t want to miss out on those things of course and who doesn’t want a healthy bank account??? but I want to be an artist more at this point in my life (because I honestly have no idea what else I’d do and it gives me so much peace).

So here goes…

Anyone guilty of overthinking all the things that are going wrong in life, over all the absolutely fantastic things??

Life is so funny like that. I have to stop myself sometimes and think, waitttttttt this is AMAZING!! For example, I don’t run ever and I ran 5k yday. I was like oh shit that was a bit slow instead of holy hell I ran 5k without stopping, yay.

Anyway, going on but I dare you to find something small that gives you joy today and if it stops you overthinking something negative for even just one minute, then jobs a gooden.

These are just a few of my favourite things to do when visiting a new place 😎

Eating local food, people watching and napping in the sun is always high on the agenda.

So is drawing… especially with friends! I always pack pens, pencils and some spare card, just in case I can persuade them to get creative… evil I know.

To me, exploring a new place doesn’t have to have an extreme agenda - I love to just stroll around and get a sense of a place.

Don’t get me wrong, I do love to see the sights or hit a museum, but a good coffee in a bustling square hits the same.

This was from my trip to Paris and I had a fantastic time and would defo recommend - whoever told me it stinks, needs to go back and try again.

The cup is very full right now.

Guys and gals, exciting news!

I’m dropping three new prints next week, which will come in a variety sizes and price points. There will also be an option for framing too (yay).

I’m currently on my way to Paris - half excited to drink coffee, draw and eat pastries and half shitting myself for what’s to come at my first hyrox (never thought those words would come out of my mouth.. but here we are, prey for me people).

Some nice things that made me smile or feel seen last week ➡️

For those of you that know me, know that I love a good quote or a corny phrase about life (they just get me going).

I particularly related to one I saw recently about being in the weird ‘in between’ stage of life, where you’re not quite where you want to be, but you’ve out grown where you used to be… so you’re just kind of stuck in this odd place, with all these big feelings.

I get very excited with all my potential options and feel like I can do anything… then five minutes later I feel very scared and ruthlessly overwhelmed because of all my potential options… it’s tough 😂

But one day at a time!

Honestly, thank god for sunny days, light evenings and 10/10 beaches in the SW, you save me every time.

Let’s say you get the chance to start over.

I saw an interview about the idea of this years ago (I think it was Lilli Reinhardt) and I often think about it.

Because life is a bit shit sometimes and we all have moments of wanting to throw in the towel and say fuck you to the universe. But then something small will happen that reminds you life can be pretty bloody lovely.

So yeah, I’m boarding the earth train, how about you?

Last week was filled with friends visiting, rainy walks in Cornwall, avo toast and tarot readings (ofc) - nothing gives me more joy than doing tarot cards with people who don’t believe in them. I often catch their eyes sparkle when something aligns with them and they try to pretend they don’t care.. it gives me such a kick ;p

There are lots of cute spots to grab coffee, baked goods and a late arvo Aperol.

Having fun making some prints this week!

Celebrating my cowgirl collection with a new series of prints, coming very very soon. Giving myself a kick up the ass to get them sorted as I am a serial procrastinator.

Creative people are always so hard on themselves and want to give up constantly.

I love to create, but some days I hate it and have absolutely zero desire to make anything.

Then when I do make something I am proud of, there is a pressure to create ‘likeable’, ‘trending’ content. It’s exhausting(!!)

So, to all the creative souls out there… stop telling yourself you are shit, you are not. Stop telling yourself you’re going to give up, that would be very silly.

And if you are not a creative person, but know a few, tell them that they are fabulous, because they are probably mid spiral over their latest post or work of art.

Are you down or what??🌞

This winter has completely shone a light on how I talk to myself… a lot of ‘it’s impossible’, ‘ I can’t’, ‘it won’t work’… bla bla bla

It’s total bs.

I saw a quote the other day that said, dream big, then x it by 1,000 (because you probably didn’t go big enough the first time round).

When you start to visualise your dream life you get a smack of dopamine and it all suddenly feels possible, that’s because it actually is.

Anyway this is the mantra I am taking into the summer because I’m bored of being mean to myself, when life can be so lovely.

Also how dreamy is Watergate?! Throwback to a few summers ago when I couldn’t surf and had to be camera lady. Thankful to have these as a reminder of how 10/10 Cornwall can be.

I will die on the hill that tequila provides nothing but fantastic times whenever it is consumed 🤪

This piece has taken me MONTHS to finish, I think I became attached and didn’t want the process of making it to be over, but she’s done.

The the aim of this painting was to create a feel good character who celebrates having a laugh and being silly… because life is meant to be fun and not so freaking serious all the time.

It’s a mixed media piece on canvas… I have used so many different mediums I’ve lost track, but it is mainly acrylic, oil pastels and ink…

Just a few reasons why I pick up my pencil pretty much every single day.

It’s my way to switch off and connect to what’s going on, on the inside, rather than paying attention to all the noise that’s going on outside.

The world can be so loud and distracting. Painting centres me and stops me from going into mini meltdowns.

It is also such a fun way to capture what’s around me and forces me to be curious and present. It also means I spend less time scrolling, which destroys most of my creativity.

People who say England is shit have obviously never been down to Cornwall, because even when it’s grey and miserable, it is still one of the most delightful places to live or visit (imo).

And when the sun does decide to come out of hibernation the vibes are 10/10.

When I don’t know what to draw, I tend to just make a massive mess first to loosen everything up… I’m talking lots of scribbles, random blobs of colour and using your hands or any other random utensils (I used a pebble at some point). The aim is to create shapes I wouldn’t normally do.

Then I find the lines I like and go over them with new colours in order to create a wee bit of texture. This is when it starts to look a bit shit, but fear not! Enjoy the process of making something ugly.

I personally enjoy drawing over old scribbles and just seeing what looks different. I thenblock out the lines I don’t need with paint pens and suddenly a shape appears.

I ended up drawing a figure of a girl crouching down, which I never do, so it was a success(!)

Drawing and creating is always more fun when you stop putting pressure on yourself to create something good, and just focus on creating instead.

This was shortly followed by a two hour nap and getting woken up by a random dog walking over my face.

Bliss.

I felt down today, so I drew something to resemble my mood.

Some days just feel a little heavier and sadder than others.

In an attempt to feel better, I forced myself to draw something after a walk over scrolling or watching tv. Drawing normally always makes me feel a little bit better, even if I make something shit.

I painted this with zero expectations and wasn’t too sure what I was even aiming for… I just wanted to put down some paint.

The end result was better than expected. ‘Blue lady’ is now a good reminder to get out of my own head and just physically do something, rather than sit and ruminate about how sad I feel (which of course just makes everything worse).

Anyway, tomorrow shall be better.

🌀getting out of plymouth and finding this new cafe(!) I spent a few hours writing and this one was so beautiful and very quiet - plus it had a strong cake cabinet :p
🌀caught up with family and went on a nice walk in the sunshine
🌀evenings are getting lighter, yay
🌀 this Ombar choc has me in a chokehold its so good
🌀 morning journals outside make my day 10000x better
🌀 fresh coffee… it just tastes better when you have it in the 🌞
